Billy Talent - Surprise Surprise (analysis)

With this video, the visuals match the meaning behind the lyrics. The Canadian band 'Billy Talent' being known for their opposition against mainstream decisions, themselves often being classed as counter culture, due to their genre of music, dress sense, and also opinions/motives. The video follows the general structure, of the video having an equilibrium towards the end, this being that the antagonist in the video has been defeated, even if it meant the deaths of the protagonists.

In the music video, the band members are shown climbing into some fighter jet planes, before flying to a city which is owned by a "pig man". The town is filled with a community of hipsters, these being who the song is against, and also the pig man. Marxism is used within this video to represent how the bourgeoisie (the rich and powerful members of society) own the workers (the general public). How this works, is that the workers get jobs which give the bourgeoisie more money, more wealth and more popularity. Which leads to them owning more and more of the world we live in, giving them more control over the public.
In this case, the pig man is the bourgeoisie character, he owns the hipsters. He is the ones owning the shops which are shown, where the teenagers are buying the same clothing and looking the same.
"You got the look, but not the credit, they wrote the book, on how to sell it" - This lyric backing up the representation of the Marxism theory within the video, and the lyrics. 'They' being the bourgeoisie and how they're controlling the markets, the fashion styles, and also what the public do and don't buy. They're the experts, and know what they're doing. With the workers buying their products, they're giving the bourgeoisie more and more money with each product they buy.
"You're the target market of a corporate joke, it won't be so ironic when your daddy is broke" - This lyric representing the workers, when it comes to the idea of Marxism theory. The workers are the target market when it comers to products being sold by the members of the bourgeoisie grouping. The idea of the high prices for cheaply made products is represented as a joke, as well as the amount of profit that the bourgeoisie earn from this.

The idea of counter culture is represented within the video, the band members being the counter culture as they're disagreeing with the 'norm' of society. This being the idea of working for the bourgeoisie, instead they decide to take him out, which leads to the pig man's death in the end. Which can be classed as a happy ending in the eyes of the fans of the band.
"Our generation is a f**king joke" - This lyric within the song representing the idea of the band's counter culture, and how they're against mainstream ideas. A majority of the generation i.e teenagers, and young adults now listening to mainstream music which features half naked artists grinding and rubbing up against each other, as well as a lack of meaning behind their lyrics. Whereas with music which is written by bands such as Billy Talent, and other relating bands of the same genre, their music is there to help people get through tough times in their life, for example; suicide, depression, self harm, and also standing out from the crowd.

With this video, it is mainly the narrative within the video which shows the meaning behind the lyrics. Cinematography also helping out, with the use of close up shots on the band members faces, which can disclaim their dominance within the narrative. As well as high angle shots being used to show the weakness of the pig man towards the end of the video. The use of editing adds to the action theme of the video, as it uses straight cuts at fast paces. This bringing the audience further into the speed of the action happening on screen. The use of mise-en-scene also relating to the meaning within the video, and also the action happening. The band members wearing the pilot uniforms which fit in with their role within the narrative, and also the use of costumes on the other members of the public.
