My Chemical Romance - I'm Not Okay (analysis)

My Chemical Romance are an American rock/metal band, which broke up several months ago. Before the break up, and also their last album, they were known for songs about heart-break, depression and also self-harming, their songs were aimed towards teenagers, and helping them through their emotions and memories. The band were represented in a similar way, and have also suffered with their own emotional difficulties, which has gained their fan base, as they know how to re-act to teenagers suffering in secret.

In this music video, the band are playing four school kids in an American high school. Representing the stereotypes, which are often seen in films, and read about in books, these stereotypes being the goths; the nerds, and also the "jocks". My Chemical Romance are represented as the nerds and the goths, as the visuals show them being picked on by the athletes of the school. This relating back to their target audience, as it can represent their every day lives of being bullied for being intelligent, dressing differently, and also listening to different music. This music video not only speaks to their fan base, but also to other different groups of people throughout the world, such as homosexuals, more mainstream people, and also those who are overweight, or have disabilities.

The song name ''I'm Not Okay'' is a clue to what the song may be about, the lyrics talk about the problems in life such as being cheated on, having accidents which can leave permanent damage. The meaning behind the song is about the singer's problems in high school, he was bullied, had no friends, and he also liked a girl that had a boyfriend.
"The photographs your boyfriend took" - Is about the girl who had a boyfriend, the boyfriend took indecent pictures of her, which then lowered her mood and made her depressed, the singer helped her out, and became good friends. The song has meaning to the band, as well as meaning something to the audience.

The use of cinematography within the music video can represent how powerful the band are when they're performing with the use of close up shots. The close up shots are mainly used to show the singer's face, as the song is about his past this has relevance, it also proves how  much he has improved since school. He is now the lead singer in a popular band, who earns money, and has a fair bit of power due to the size of the My Chemical Romance fan base.

With the use of editing, sentences and words are shown on screen, a few of those sentences and words being; "If you ever felt alone", "If you ever felt rejected", "If you ever felt curious". These words flash up on screen, using white font against a black background which catches the eye of the audience, gaining their attention and also making them think. The sentences represent what teenagers can go through, throughout school, for example; experimenting with their sexuality, feeling alone and having no friends, and not to mention being bullied.

This video speaks out to those who had a hard time through school, because it makes them realise they're not alone when it comes to this situation. They can speak out to other people, instead of keeping all of the pain and secrets to themselves.
