Music Video Progression

New Found Glory's music video for the song 'My Friend's Over You' is a perfect example of how music videos have progressed since the first made by Queen for 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. This music video features different effects such as making one of the band members head extremely large, and also clever shots. Another example of a clever use of cinematography and performance being when the singer leans down with the microphone into the crowd, where himself is also in the audience singing into the microphone and acting all excited. The music is of a different genre of that to Queen's, also punk, and pop punk did derive originally from rock and pop music. This music video featuring odd scenes like the ones mentioned, which fit in with the genre of the music, yet they don't match the actual lyrics themselves, making this an abstract music video. The colour schemes used within the music video match the genre of punk, and pop punk, as there are bright reds, yellows and other vibrant colours used. Punks always being known for standing out with vibrant colours on their clothes, and also their hair.

Placebo are a more slow paced band, which are still punk, yet they can also be classed as goth, due to the trans guitar sounds in the background of most songs, making them dark yet mystical. The music video for Placebo's song 'The Never Ending Why' is an animation, which is another stand of music video that can still be effective to portray lyrics and meaning within the song. The visuals shown on the animation consist of blacks, dark/light purples, and also blue shades. This representing their genre of music as Gothic yet also slightly punk, as the colours are different. The animation consists of a male and a female, consistently being dragged through the world they live in which matches in with the lyrics, meaning this video is structured around a narrative.

Videos in the modern age have changed drastically from simple music videos where they just showed the band performing in a room, or on a stage for a live performance. Back then the music videos didn't have meaning, and also didn't match the lyrics, making all the videos abstract. Now that technology has incredibly improved, so have the videos, giving directors and the artists the chance to make either a video structured on narrative, or a completely abstract video. As well as this, a lot of videos now feature odd scenes, such as nude women/half nude women, and other attractions to gain the audience's attention and also publicity.

Rock Music Timeline

This timeline is more of an insight to the rock genre, and how it began to branch out from the 1950's, into different sub-genres of music such as glam rock, soft rock, hard rock and so on. This giving a different diversity, and creating a larger target audience for such music/artists. From these genres eventually came the pop punk genre, which can sometimes be heavier than rock, and sometimes be lighter than rock but faster paced.

Music Video History 'Queen'

Queen are an English rock band that started in 1970. They went on to make the very first music video, that was made for the purpose to show them playing their music in some form of narrative/more physical form instead of just listening to the song itself. The song they used for this first music video was 'Bohemian Rhapsody', the single from their 1975 album 'A Night At The Opera'. The single is still popular now, and a vast majority of people like the band Queen, some more than others, those who don't like the band as much at least like one song. That song usually being 'Bohemian Rhapsody' as it is different from any other song, it doesn't feature a chorus, it consists of a ballad segment which ends with a guitar solo, it featured a hard rock section and also a section of operatic singing. The lost of their front man Freddie Mercury, stopped the band in it's tracks before they went on to release the album the band had all been working on a few months after his death, this also being a best seller. Freddie Mercury was known for having one of the greatest voices of all time, due to the pitches and scales he could meet, managing to sing such low notes before skipping up to incredibly high notes.

The video is simple, and basic featuring different shots, and also merging several shots together before fading them out against each other. This having a creative effect, and almost makes the beginning scenes of the video when the band are singing in sync, in the poses almost eerie, and adds a slight shudder to the aspect of the song. It then proceeds on to show the band on the stage, performing their song for the camera.

These charts show the sales of the single 'Bohemian Rhapsody' alone, without the album it belongs to. The single managed to stay in the top 20, in 12 different countries a year after it was released. It also managed to be positioned in 2nd place, in the 'Billboard Hot 100' in the US, in 1992. This being 12 years after the single was released, and even now the single is still popular, no matter what genre of music a person tends to listen to. The sales and certifications table at the bottom of the image also shows how popular the song was, it selling over 6 million vinyl copies of the single alone.

The Rock Top 40 Singles (October 2013)

These images are of the recent top 40 rock singles sold, up to the date of 13th October 2013. These can help my project in the sense of ideas for album designs, ideas for what to feature in my music video (e.g certain features to add into the music video, such as mise-en-scene costume designs), and also what to mention the new album is going to sound like compared to other artists. If I mention popular selling artists such as the one on images, it will help attract a wider audience.

  • 39% of respondents 45-54 reduced their spending to a large degree

This servey was produced by the company Nielsen, who have found out what ages tend to download music, how the more aged audience have decreased their spending, and also who tends to purcahse CD's and digital downloads.

This can help with determining how to attract my target audience to my digipak, and also when it comes to the advertisement in the magazine, which will attract the audience, but I also need to catch their eye and give them some form of persuasion, i.e offering digital downloads of the albums (yet still charging a price to do so), this can be done via iTunes, or even Spotify.

The survery produced by Nielsen, can also correlate with my own survey and back up some of my own results, as both surverys prove that the younger audiences are the most likely to listen to newer music, as well as purchasing the music. It also proves that more teens attend concerts, and that more males are most likely to go out and purchase rock music, whereas the females are more likely to listen to the more mainstream music which features on the top 40 charts.

Why I chose this genre?

I have chosen the rock/metal genre of music, as it is what I have been raised to listen to since I was a little child. Starting off with classic bands such as Queen, Bon Jovi and Whitesnake, before I gained my own knowledge which lead to listening to heavier bands. As well as this reason I also chose this genre due to it's ever growing audience. As well as the pop culture, and audience being a large population of the planet. The other genre with a large audience following up to the pop genre is rock and metal music. A lot of the audience that listen to more pop and mainstream music, also listen to rock when it comes to bands such as Aerosmith, Queen, and others from similar time periods.

Feedback from Polls

The above images are print screens of the polls which are placed down the side of my blog. Some are multiple choice questions which can help with the statistics of my target audience, the polls being available to all those who visit the blog. For example; 21 people have answered the gender question, saying that 11 of them were male, and 10 were female. This can be used in evidence to prove that slightly more males often listen to heavy metal/rock music, than females do. As well as this, the average age groups which the public thinks listem to rock music are mainly 18 - 24 and 25 - 34 years old, with the odd exceptions of those aged 12 - 17. This proving how the younger generations are most likely to listen to the heavier genres of music, this can be due to older generations being used to music they listened to when they were younger so they refuse to listen to other new genres.
Another question which some of the public answered was what age group do music videos mainly apply to, in which they answered with the same age demographics. This representing the demographics in the sense that a majority of the younger generations have access to the internet, and also technology that supplies the use of the internet - which means they also know about websites such as Muzu, and YouTube, this allowing them to watch music videos. They're also more in contact with the artists they listen to, due to the use of social networking sites such as Facebook, and Twitter. Which is where the artists often post about new albums, filming new music videos, and also releasing new music videos. With this, people also commented saying what they look for in a music video, when it comes to the use of stylistics, is mainly mise-en-scene. They have voted this the most important, due to the fact mise-en-scene covers costume, lighting, and also the setting. Which can help describe the narrative in music videos, film trailers, and films/television programmes. The costumes can help connote a character's persona, and also his role within the narrative.

Target Audience

When it comes to the target audience of the song/genre I have chosen to create a music video for, the audience are mainly those who stand out from mainstream groups. This meaning they dress differently, act differently, and also listen to different music. The target audience can be classed as niche, as they differ from mainstream audiences in many ways. The artists themselves are also clashed as niche, in the fact they don't follow the 'norm' that is expected in society.
The age groups which are often seen listening to rock music are 18 - 24, and also 25 - 34 years of age, with some groups of people from the ages of 12 - 17 also listening to this genre of music. This meaning that more people of a younger age are listening to heavier styled music, whereas those of an older age either listen to more mainstream music, or more aged music such as The Beatles, or even Queen in some circumstances.

The age groups for the target audience are those listed above, due to the fact they're mainly the ones who have time to listen to music, especially of that genre. Although they may not have a high income, they are more in contact with technology than those of an older age. This meaning they most probably have their own computer, or mobile phone, most likely both. They will also have a better understanding of the internet, than those who are older will. With their knowledge of the internet, they can stream music online, as well as downloading the music off torrent sites such as piratebay. They also know how to use iTunes, which is a site created by the company Apple, where if owning an Apple product, you can purchase songs at any time. This can relate to miniaturisation, and also how portable technology has become, if it is updated. The younger age groups often owning the latest phones, and other technologies, due to their parents, and saving up from jobs.

Chosen Video/Song

The song I have chosen to make a music video for is All I Want by the American band A Day To Remember. I have chosen this as it is one of my all time favourite songs, written by one of my favourite bands. This song being off their latest album 'What Separates Me From You', my favourite album of theirs.

I also chose this song due to the video itself. I enjoy watching the video as the band have gotten other bands to join in from all around the world, who are filmed singing the lyrics. This can give a great atmosphere to the video itself, as well as giving the impression that the bands are all friends, and are their for the audience. Which fits in with the lyrics "All I want is a place to call my own, to mend the hearts of everyone who feels alone." Which backs up the idea of all the bands performing in the video, making out that they are their for the fans who need them, and listen to their music. Representing how support from the fans is there for the bands, and support from the bands is there for the fans.

The use of editing when it comes to the words and images on screen also represent the band themselves, as their style is quirky and also different when it comes to their other music videos. This can represent how their music style has changed ever so slightly, and isn't as heavy as it used to be on their old albums. But it still shows that they are the same band, and that themselves personally haven't altered or changed in any way.

The use of mise-en-scene within the video is continuous as all the bands are wearing similar styled clothing, and also roughly the same colours each time. They also match the stereotype of this genre, as some have long black hair, some are wearing eyeliner and skinny jeans, and others have a more aggressive appearance due to the mass of tattoos on their skin. This also representing how the fan base can also dress, once again letting them know that the bands are there for them no matter what.

The use of cinematography also gives an impression within this music video, as a lot of the shots are used as close ups, and low angles looking up at the different bands and band members. This making them look dominant, which can also fit in with the beat and pace of the song. The fast pace making the song sound rough, and also slightly violent yet strong at the same time.

Initial Ideas

These are the three initial ideas for the narrative/planning of my music, two of the ideas fitting with the lyrics, and the other idea being classed as an abstract video, this meaning it has no relation to the meaning behind the lyrics. With these, I can get a better understanding of what needs to be done for my music video, as well as what can feature in the music video. It will also help with planning out the actors costumes, makeup, actions, and movements.

Screamo Music Genre

The screamo genre is a sub-genre of hardcore punk, as well as the heavy metal genre, as well as emo music. The genre came around in the 1990's and since then has gained popularity throughout the years. Due to the quick increase in people listening to the music, a new name was actually created for the first wave of popularity, this being skramz.
Screamo music generally uses typical rock instruments such as guitars, drums, bass - as well as featuring a brief compositions, chaotic rhythm and execution and also of course, the screaming vocals. The screamo vocals obviously giving the style of music it's name. A lot of screamo genre music does change, and they are all actually different. This being due to the fact when the singers are in fact screaming, no-one can ever match the sound to the same pitch and depth, it always has a variation with each singer. Some may have higher pitched screams, and the others may have a deeper scream.
      Image
When it comes to the image of the band members in screamo themed bands, their looks can often vary especially when it comes to the clothing, hairstyles and also makeup. Although the looks can vary, the members also seem to find a right look which expresses their style of music, and more often than not their feelings.
     Makeup
Screamo bands don't always have the image of makeup, featuring on their face or even just around their eyes. Although some bands have continued to carry on the style of glam rock, although their music may be very different from that style. One recent band which is famous for their makeup is a band going by the name of Black Veil Brides. They're famous for having simple, yet memorable makeup styles. Such as, black stitches coming from the corner of their lips, diamonds which stretch over their eyes and down their face, and also simple over exaggerated eye liner. Another band being Motionless in White, one of their members having the side of their face painted to look like a cliff side, which features a tree upon the top.
      Clothing

The clothing in the screamo genre can range from one thing to another, in today's age it's often difficult to determine who does actually listen to this genre - a lot of people often wear normal jeans or even track suit bottoms and tend to wear whatever tops they wish. But going with the theme of the fans, and sticking to the stereotypical views. Most screamo band fans, tend to wear band shirts, big boots or high top sneaker brands, skinny jeans and hoodies - sometimes the clothing may consist of having 'taboo' words featuring on it, or even violent scenes. The band members of the screamo genre roughly wearing similar styled clothing, or tight leather pants, or odd looking jackets and other items of clothing.
      Concert Performance

When it comes to the concerts performance from the audience's eyes, the usual thing to do would be to either headbang. Which consists of throwing your head back and forth, to the beat of the song. Or the "devil horns" which is a hand symbol, it's other more common name being the "rock on" hand gesture. Which is when the audience creates a fist, and then sticks out the two fingers which feature on either end of their hand.
The band members can basically do anything they want on stage, and literally do anything they want. From crowd surfing, to climbing up the railings of the stage which they're playing on.

Rock Music Genre

Rock music is probably one of the most popular genres out there in the world, it's full length name when it first came around being "rock and roll" which originated in the 1950's. It then ranged into multiple different styles in the 1960's in mainly the United States of America and the United Kingdom. The genre is heavily influenced by other genres such as country music, and also the blues. It also took influences from genres such as jazz, classical and folk music. The rock genre literally being the reason as to why most other heavy genres are actually invented, and around now.
     Music Style

When it comes to rock music, the average band will consist of a drummer, a guitarist, a bassist and also a singer. The guitars tending to be electric, although some acoustics do get used when it comes to certain songs - on stage, or in rock band's albums.
     Spawn Styles

Thanks to the creation of the rock genre, many styles have originated from this. The most known being heavy metal, which is also one of the biggest genres going at the moment. Not only heavy metal, but also glam rock. No matter who you ask, everyone always knows at least one glam rock band or artist - going from David Bowie all the way to bands such as Aerosmith or Bon Jovi.
These artists actually being some of the biggest names in music history, and the present day of music. Everybody knows at least one of their songs. Thanks to these upcoming styles, even more began to emerge later on, such as punk music. This lead to punk rock, and also pop punk. Some bands from this category being Fall Out Boy, and Green Day. Two more well known bands.

      Clothing and hair
When it comes to the style of rock bands, it really does vary in many different ways. Some chose to wear very tight material pants which usually came along with flamboyant and very bold colours, with long baggy cardigan styled tops. This meant showing off most of their upper torso. A few examples of members/singers of bands who followed this style are; Axl Rose (Guns N' Roses), and also Steven Tyler (Aerosmith).
Another style of outfits would be simple, but also the same as those who were classed as being in the glam rock section. Besides from flamboyant colours, it would be a mass of makeup, huge/long hair, and also the famous leather jackets.
The audience would either also follow this style of clothing, or re-create their own. Some also wearing 'casual' clothing, which would be the classic blue jeans, boots, and also the band shirts. Most band shirts from this era only featuring the band's actual logo, no other images.

My Chemical Romance - I'm Not Okay (analysis)

My Chemical Romance are an American rock/metal band, which broke up several months ago. Before the break up, and also their last album, they were known for songs about heart-break, depression and also self-harming, their songs were aimed towards teenagers, and helping them through their emotions and memories. The band were represented in a similar way, and have also suffered with their own emotional difficulties, which has gained their fan base, as they know how to re-act to teenagers suffering in secret.

In this music video, the band are playing four school kids in an American high school. Representing the stereotypes, which are often seen in films, and read about in books, these stereotypes being the goths; the nerds, and also the "jocks". My Chemical Romance are represented as the nerds and the goths, as the visuals show them being picked on by the athletes of the school. This relating back to their target audience, as it can represent their every day lives of being bullied for being intelligent, dressing differently, and also listening to different music. This music video not only speaks to their fan base, but also to other different groups of people throughout the world, such as homosexuals, more mainstream people, and also those who are overweight, or have disabilities.

The song name ''I'm Not Okay'' is a clue to what the song may be about, the lyrics talk about the problems in life such as being cheated on, having accidents which can leave permanent damage. The meaning behind the song is about the singer's problems in high school, he was bullied, had no friends, and he also liked a girl that had a boyfriend.
"The photographs your boyfriend took" - Is about the girl who had a boyfriend, the boyfriend took indecent pictures of her, which then lowered her mood and made her depressed, the singer helped her out, and became good friends. The song has meaning to the band, as well as meaning something to the audience.

The use of cinematography within the music video can represent how powerful the band are when they're performing with the use of close up shots. The close up shots are mainly used to show the singer's face, as the song is about his past this has relevance, it also proves how  much he has improved since school. He is now the lead singer in a popular band, who earns money, and has a fair bit of power due to the size of the My Chemical Romance fan base.

With the use of editing, sentences and words are shown on screen, a few of those sentences and words being; "If you ever felt alone", "If you ever felt rejected", "If you ever felt curious". These words flash up on screen, using white font against a black background which catches the eye of the audience, gaining their attention and also making them think. The sentences represent what teenagers can go through, throughout school, for example; experimenting with their sexuality, feeling alone and having no friends, and not to mention being bullied.

This video speaks out to those who had a hard time through school, because it makes them realise they're not alone when it comes to this situation. They can speak out to other people, instead of keeping all of the pain and secrets to themselves.

Metalcore Music Genre

Metalcore is what is classed as a fusion genre, this meaning it is made up of two other genres of music. This genre being made up of extreme metal, and also hardcore punk. The songs often contains breakdowns in their instrumentals, this meaning that the tones of the instruments may drop down to low notes, or build up to high notes. It can also mean that the song becomes a lot calmer, which is classed as a build up. At concerts this build up is used to put the audience on edge before they have to proceed to create a 'mosh pit' (which is where the audience members begin to charge around in a circle bumping into each other rather violently) or they make a 'wall of death'. This being similar to a mosh pit, except they don't run in a circle. The audience members separate into two groups, before turning to face each group, in which they then run with speed at each other, in a violent manner, before punches and kicks are being thrown. Bands that fit into this genre are Bullet For My Valentine, The Devil Wears Prada, and also Killswitch Engage.

Billy Talent - Surprise Surprise (analysis)

With this video, the visuals match the meaning behind the lyrics. The Canadian band 'Billy Talent' being known for their opposition against mainstream decisions, themselves often being classed as counter culture, due to their genre of music, dress sense, and also opinions/motives. The video follows the general structure, of the video having an equilibrium towards the end, this being that the antagonist in the video has been defeated, even if it meant the deaths of the protagonists.

In the music video, the band members are shown climbing into some fighter jet planes, before flying to a city which is owned by a "pig man". The town is filled with a community of hipsters, these being who the song is against, and also the pig man. Marxism is used within this video to represent how the bourgeoisie (the rich and powerful members of society) own the workers (the general public). How this works, is that the workers get jobs which give the bourgeoisie more money, more wealth and more popularity. Which leads to them owning more and more of the world we live in, giving them more control over the public.
In this case, the pig man is the bourgeoisie character, he owns the hipsters. He is the ones owning the shops which are shown, where the teenagers are buying the same clothing and looking the same.
"You got the look, but not the credit, they wrote the book, on how to sell it" - This lyric backing up the representation of the Marxism theory within the video, and the lyrics. 'They' being the bourgeoisie and how they're controlling the markets, the fashion styles, and also what the public do and don't buy. They're the experts, and know what they're doing. With the workers buying their products, they're giving the bourgeoisie more and more money with each product they buy.
"You're the target market of a corporate joke, it won't be so ironic when your daddy is broke" - This lyric representing the workers, when it comes to the idea of Marxism theory. The workers are the target market when it comers to products being sold by the members of the bourgeoisie grouping. The idea of the high prices for cheaply made products is represented as a joke, as well as the amount of profit that the bourgeoisie earn from this.

The idea of counter culture is represented within the video, the band members being the counter culture as they're disagreeing with the 'norm' of society. This being the idea of working for the bourgeoisie, instead they decide to take him out, which leads to the pig man's death in the end. Which can be classed as a happy ending in the eyes of the fans of the band.
"Our generation is a f**king joke" - This lyric within the song representing the idea of the band's counter culture, and how they're against mainstream ideas. A majority of the generation i.e teenagers, and young adults now listening to mainstream music which features half naked artists grinding and rubbing up against each other, as well as a lack of meaning behind their lyrics. Whereas with music which is written by bands such as Billy Talent, and other relating bands of the same genre, their music is there to help people get through tough times in their life, for example; suicide, depression, self harm, and also standing out from the crowd.

With this video, it is mainly the narrative within the video which shows the meaning behind the lyrics. Cinematography also helping out, with the use of close up shots on the band members faces, which can disclaim their dominance within the narrative. As well as high angle shots being used to show the weakness of the pig man towards the end of the video.
